Many clients contact me after seeing several traditional therapists for narcissistic abuse, and not getting results. Narcissistic abuse is a very complex issue. It is not easily understood by most therapists.
Although narcissistic personality disorder is studied for diagnostic purposes, the effects of this disorder on those closest to the narcissist are not studied or understood. As a result most therapists simply don’t know how to work with victims of narcissistic abuse.
Not only is traditional therapy not helpful for the healing of narcissistic abuse, it can often hinder the process. For example, many of my clients report how they felt undermined and invalidated by their therapists. Understanding and validation is critical for healing narcissistic abuse.
The therapists will often focus on the insecurities of the client without the understanding of how the narcissist, through his or her manipulation of the client, can foster those insecurities.
Although traditional therapy can be helpful for building self-esteem and understanding lifelong patterns, it really does little to help the client to understand what she has gone through. As a result, the client is not given the necessary steps to really heal and move on.
The good news is there is help available. There are many counselors who have gone through narcissistic abuse and bring their personal experience to the healing table.
I began specializing in narcissistic abuse after going through it myself. I bring my personal experience as well as in depth research on the topic. As a result, I have counseled thousands of victims of narcissistic abuse successfully.
